A typing test, kept simple.

ButterType is a small typing practice tool. No accounts, no tracking, nothing sent to a server — it runs entirely in your browser, using nothing but this page.

What's in it

Four ways to practice: fixed-time drills, a set word count, literary and historical quotes, and full essays written for reading practice as much as typing practice. Word difficulty ranges from beginner vocabulary up through a specific Grade 12 curriculum list, each with its own set of practice essays.

Where the content comes from

Essays. Every essay — all 108 of them, across every level and topic — was written for this app. None are copied from anywhere.

Quotes. Mostly historical speeches, philosophy, and literature old enough to be in the public domain. A smaller set of short, iconic single-line movie quotes are used the way a trivia app would use them.

Vocabulary. The Grade 12 word lists follow a UAE Ministry of Education curriculum, drawn from a teacher's own course materials. Word lists themselves aren't the kind of thing copyright protects — they're closer to facts than creative writing.

Your data

Settings, themes, and personal bests are saved with localStorage, directly in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, because there isn't one — ButterType is a static page, not a service. Clearing your browser data clears everything ButterType has stored.

The code

Coded with the help of Claude. Written from scratch as plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with no build step and no dependencies. Some of its typing-test conventions — measuring words-per-minute, showing raw vs. corrected speed, that kind of thing — are common across typing test apps generally rather than unique to any one of them, and nothing here was copied from another project's source code.

Terms of use

Last updated: 2026

Short, because there isn't much to say. ButterType is free to use for personal or educational purposes — share the link, use it in a classroom, adapt the page for your own practice. There's no account, no payment, and nothing collected, so most of what a typical terms page covers simply doesn't apply here.

It's provided as-is, with no guarantee it's free of bugs or that it will always be available — a personal project, not a maintained commercial product. If something breaks, feel free to flag it, but there's no obligation on either side beyond that.

These terms may be updated if the app itself changes — for example, if a feature that sends data to a server is ever added. Any such change would be reflected on this page.
